THE SUNNAH WAY OF
EATING
சாப்பிடுவதின் ஸுன்னத்துக்கள்
There are many different narrations which describe the manner which the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) ate food.
Learning the proper etiquette for eating at the table is important and these can be broken into three different categories. They are (1) Before eating, (2) while eating (3) after eating.
As you will shortly see, the Sunnah of eating are timeless and still relevant today.
As the Prophet Muhammad said “I was sent to perfect good character.” [1]
1.
To spread out a cloth
on the floor.
விரிப்பை
விரிப்பது.
2.
To wash both hands up
to the wrists.
இரண்டு
கைகளையும் மணிக்கட்டு வரை கழுவுவது.
3.
To say the dua before
eating.
சாப்பிடுவதற்கு
முன்பு துஆ ஓதுவது.
4.
To sit either with
one or both legs folded beneath.
குந்த வைத்து
உட்காருவது, அல்லது அத்தஹியாத் முறையில் உட்காருவது.
5.
To eat with the right
hand.
வலது கையால்
சாப்பிடுவது.
6.
To eat the food right
in front of you.
தன்
பக்கமிருந்து சாப்பிடுவது.
Abdullah Ibn Umar Narrated:
“I heard my father say: ‘I heard ‘Umar bin Khattab say: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Eat together and do not eat separately, for the blessing is in being together.’” Sunan Ibn Majah (Hassan)

To eat with three
fingers.
மூன்று
விரல்களால் சாப்பிடுவது.
Ka’b Ibn Malik states:
“The Prophet ﷺ used to eat with three fingers and lick his hand before he wiped it.” Sahih Muslim
8.
To pick up and eat
any food that falls down.
உணவு கீழே
விழுந்து விட்டால், அதை எடுத்துச் சாப்பிடுவது.
From the Hadith of Jabir:
I heard Allah’s Apostle ﷺ as saying: The Satan is present with any one of you in everything he does; he is present even when he eats food; so if any one of you drops a mouthful he should remove away anything filthy on it and eat it and not leave for the devil; and when he finishes (food) he should lick his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of his food the blessing lies. Sahih Muslim
9.
To clean the plate
and lick the fingers.
தட்டை
வழித்தும், கை விரல்களை சூப்பியும் சாப்பிடுவது.
Jabir Bin Abdullah narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“He should not wipe his hand with a tissue until he licks his fingers, for he does not know in which part of his food is the blessing”. Sahih Muslim
“The Prophet ﷺ used to eat with three fingers and lick his hand before he wiped it.” Sahih Muslim
10.
Not to lean while
eating.
சாய்ந்து கொண்டு சாப்பிடக் கூடாது.
11.
Not to find any fault
in the food.
உணவில் குறை
கூறக் கூடாது.
Abu Huraira narrates that:
“The Prophet ﷺ did not criticise any food ever. If he desired the food, he would eat it and if he disliked it, he would leave it.” Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim
12.
Not to eat food that
is too hot.
மிகவும் சூடாக
சாப்பிடக் கூடாது.
Jabir reported:
The Prophet ﷺ asked for sauce and was told that there was nothing except vinegar. He asked for it and began to eat from it saying, “How excellent is vinegar when eaten as a condiment! How excellent is vinegar when eaten as a condiment! Sahih Muslim
13.
To say the dua after
eating.
சாப்பிட்ட
பிறகு துஆ ஓதுவது.
14.
To wash the hands and
rinse the mouth after eating.
சாப்பிட்ட
பிறகு கை கழுவி, வாய் கொப்பளித்துக் கொள்வது.
Anas Bin Malik narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah is pleased with a servant if he eats his food, he praises Allah for it; or if he drinks his drink he praises Allah for it”. Sahih Muslim
